Project Car Update: The V8 Edition

Project Mustang 5.0

Project Mustang 5.0 continues down the rabbit hole that is autocross.  Vince remains determined in his efforts to prove that this latest incarnation of the S197 Mustang chassis is a capable autocross machine.  Having fortified his suspension with Whiteline and learned at least 7 lessons about autocross he's ready for another season.

In the background you can see the Nitto NT05s which have served admirably through two seasons of autocross and two years of street driving.  They will continue to serve daily driving duty but have been retired from autocross use.

While I've not ridden in this machine as of yet I look forward to the day when I can ride along to experience some cone dodging myself.  Vince has been hard at work getting ready for another season of autocross and has decided to upgrade the rolling stock with a more autocross specific set of wheels and tires.  He is now running a non-staggered setup consisting of 18×10 AMR wheels and 285/40/18 Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires for better grip.

Project Mustang has also had an alignment performed to get slightly more camber, straighten out the toe, and try to fix some of the tramlining that the car was experiencing with the wider tires.

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires have a treadwear rating of 180.  The plan right now is to mount these to the vehicle the night prior to an event and pull them off afterwards.  I bet a few months from now he'll be running the Eagles on the street and R compounds at the track…

Vince says: “You can see that the initial toe settings were completely jacked up.”
