Project E36 M3: Part 1 – Taming the Wobbly Beast

,

Michelin PSS Pilot Super Sport rainI hadn't driven in the rain on track in years, and I hadn't driven a stock-ish M3 on track in even longer, but that meant nothing.  It didn't take any time at all to get up to speed and the grip of the PSS tires in the rain was downright phenomenal.  Not a hint of hydroplaning during the hardest rainfall and deepest water, and lateral grip was otherworldly.

As conditions dried out I was reminded of the fact that they were street tires, but I still walked away thoroughly impressed.  Dry grip was just shy of some typical track-day tires out there, and it was really only under heavy braking that they may have fallen a bit short of R-compounds, but not by a huge amount.

Overall, the best street tires I've ever used, and apparently they should also offer a significant life expectancy considering what they're capable of.  I have a feeling some of the newest street tires geared towards fast laps for the autocross crowd might have a bit more ultimate dry grip, but I doubt any of them can check off every box quite like these Michelins.

stock E36 M3 non-staggered wheelsWhile there may be dozens upon dozens of typical E36 M3 projects out there, this one is shaping up to offer some things you’ve never seen on an E36 before, or potentially any other car for that matter.  Particularly with the suspension.  Stay tuned!
