We discussed in Part-7 the benefits of multi-disc clutches, which provide similar pedal effort and clamping load to the stock clutch, but gain their torque capacity by having multiple discs.
A really great thing about the McLeod twin disc RST and RXT clutch for the 1×23 spline stock Mazda FD RX-7 transmission is that it is “future-proof”. If you invest in either of these clutches, they can be sent to McLeod to be inspected and the 1×26 spline center section can be installed when it is time to upgrade the transmission to the Tremec T5 Magnum. For extreme uses, the pressure plate can also be changed to upgrade an RXT to an RXT1200 without having to buy an entirely new clutch.
The RST and RXT clutches features a lightweight flywheel CNC machined from billet alloy steel. The hardened steel starter ring gear must be purchased separately from suppliers like Atkins Rotary or Mazdatrix.
The RST twin disc clutch and flywheel assembly tipped the scales at 37.0lbs
We are very excited to get one of our favorite high-performance street clutches, the McLeod RST twin disc organic clutch and engine installed in our car.
Stay tuned for future installments of Project FD RX-7 “Restomod”
