Project FD RX7 Restomod: Part 7 -McLeod RST, the Ultimate Streetable Twin Disc?

Again notice the flat angle of the drive straps holding the floater to the flywheel.  Straighter straps mean that there is less air gap and less engagement travel for this disc.  This is one of the secrets to why this clutch is so smooth for a race-style twin disc.

Here is the pressure plate, it is a diaphragm spring-type pressure plate with a stamped steel cover.  Diaphragm clutches are known to be easy on the leg with a smooth progressive type of engagement.

Here is the pressure ring of the pressure plate.  Notice how the drive straps for the pressure ring have more of a bend to them.

You can see how the pressure ring is held off the diaphragm spring by the drive straps a little bit more than the floater which allows it to touch down first as the clutch is engaged, before the floater and lower disc. This spreads out the engagement over more pedal travel, making the clutch smoother from the start.

First, the pressure ring starts to engage the disc, then the first disc starts to engage the floater, then the floater touches down on the second disc, and finally, the second disc engages the flywheel.  This gives a progressive start to the clutch engagement and makes things amazingly smooth!  Normally on a twin disc, everything comes together at once and it’s up to the driver to modulate the pedal and be smooth, not the easiest thing with a typical race clutch with short engagement!

UPDATE (4/2024):

McLeod 1400 Series Hydraulic Bearing with a 1.310The McLeod 1400 Series Hydraulic Bearing with a 1.310″ adjuster (PN: 1400-22) is needed to convert the the FD RX-7 pull-style clutch to a push-style for use with the McLeod RST clutch.  This was previously not available and now available from McLeod.

So there you have it, the 800hp rated McLeod RST clutch should have more than enough holding power for our planned engine mods while giving us the street-ability and refinement that will go along with the rest of our build.  We are excited to get this into the car ASAP!
