Project Hypermiler: Handling Upgrades

,

Nitto’s new Motivo represents the previously impossible: long lasting ultra-high performance tires that perform well year round, all while still allowing for a quiet ride.  The Motivo is a non-directional tire that allows for cross-rotation, features four wide circumferential grooves for superior water evacuation on rainy days, fin sipes for winter traction, and large outside tread blocks for cornering performance.  The Motivo also features an ultra-stiff carcass and solid bead to improve cornering feel and tread stability.  The best part?  Nitto’s backing the tire up with a 60,000 mile limited treadwear warranty, longer than any other manufacturer’s warranty in this segment.

Not hellaflush, but certainly hellafunctional.  Near-stock scrub radius was maintained with this wheel offset and tire combo.

Nitto was able to achieve this new treadwear warranty and performance combination through their Advanced Tire Operation Operation Module (ATOM) and new silica-reinforced compound.  Silica additives in the tire allow it to resist hardening through heat cycling throughout the tire’s lifetime.

The Motivos, however, aren’t just an UHP with a long treadwear warranty.  They’ve also got some features that are especially useful for making sure the tires live up to their warranty.  Perhaps the coolest feature are the alignment indicators on the outside tread blocks of the tire.  Each shoulder features a series of three dots.  If one side has its dot disappear sooner than the other, then the car’s alignment is off and needs to be checked.
