Sera is amazed at how light her ACT Prolite flywheel is.

The stock Nissan flywheel is a monster that belongs more on a diesel truck than a sports car.  It is a two piece dual mass part with an inertia ring.  It weighs an amazing 29 lbs.  We think that Nissan designed the flywheel this way because the transmission does not have a lash takeup device like older Nissan transmissions and tends to rattle at idle and low rpm.  Nissan probably figured that some people might freak out at this minor noise so they designed the flywheel as a huge mass damper to reduce NVH.

We used Royal Purple Synchromax synthetic gear oil in the 350Z’s transmission.

The flywheel is so heavy it makes the excellent VQ35DE engine feel sluggish.  It also makes heel and toe shifting difficult.  The large amount of inertia is also hard on the transmission’s synchros and is probably one of the main reasons why the transmission has so many complaints of grinding.  Nissan has gone through at least 3 iterations of synchro updates with this transmission and most of the problem is actually probably due to the really heavy flywheel!

Christa Kojima is doing her best not to have her picture taken.

The ACT flywheel weighs in at 11 lbs, more than twice as light as the stock part.  The Prolite flywheel is usually recommended for road racing and is lighter than street oriented Streetlite flywheel in that it has additional lightening slots milled around the periphery of the flywheel where it has the greatest impact on rotational inertia.

The Nismo LSD is a highly adjustable mechanical LSD.  We chose it for its wide range of adjustability.

The flywheel is machined from a chrome-moly blank forging as a single piece.   This means that the OBDII sensor ring and starter ring teeth are all part of the flywheel.  No worries about anything coming loose.  After machining, the flywheel is dynamically balanced then heat treated for strength and improved hardness on the wear surfaces.  ACT says it is safe to resurface this flywheel so it should have a long service life.  The flywheel is SFI certified, a very important item as well.

We WPC treated the clutch plates.  WPC treating makes an amazing difference in diff smoothness, noise, wear and temperature.  This is a must do mod for any LSD!
