Project R35 GT-R, Saving Weight With a Greddy Titanium Exhaust System!
Next, the mid pipe is unbolted from the rear mufflers and removed.
Changing the exhaust on a GT-R is one of the most time-consuming installs of any car we have tackled so far, a lot of the back of the car has to be disassembled to get to the rear mufflers.

A lot of the difficulty is because the GT-R has good underbody aero that has to be removed. First, we had to remove the rear diffuser and the to side undertray pieces behind the rear wheels.

The diffusers support brackets have to be removed. There is no getting around this.
The side brackets that support the rear bumper and the bottom panels in front of the tires need to be removed. Believe us, we wasted a lot of time trying to get the muffler out without it only to fail after a lot of wiggling around.
The final thing we removed to give us plenty of room was to remove the chrome tips on the stock exhaust. This gave us the last bit of wiggle room we needed to get the mufflers out without scratching and bending things.
After taking the stock mufflers out, we lifted the Greddy mufflers in place. With everything removed, we were able to tilt the Greddy mufflers in place smoothly without scratching things up. The fact that the mufflers were so light was a plus when it came to making the install go a little easier.

Here Howard reinstalls the diffuser and side panel brackets. We also had to bend the stock heat shields to clear the back side of the muffler slightly so it would not rub.  It is super easy to bend the heat shield by hand and not a big deal at all.

  1. It’s running the front cats. Most of the weight reduction is still coming from the material selection.

  2. It would be cool to see GReddy come out with a side-pipe kit for the GTR, where the exhaust comes out right behind the front wheels. That would save more weight, and require less material. I imagine the sound in the cabin would be brutal.

    1. It’s pretty technically impossible to do on a street car, it would involve cutting holes in the unibody.
