Project V8 RX-7: Part 14 – Going Wide with Rocket Bunny’s new FD3S Widebody Aero Kit

,

Rocket Bunny RX-7Those five little holes are for the optional LED daytime running lights that can also be used as turn signals you can purchase with the kit.  The front bumper also has perfectly round holes to make it easy to add brake ducting without having to fabricate additonal shrouding–a thoughtful touch!
Rocket Bunny RX-7A separate lower lip that bolts to the front bumper was probably conceived to be something easily replaced when you smash this one up!  This kit is LOW!  It has a flat bottom which will make it easy to bolt a splitter onto (see what we did there, that’s foreshadowing).
Rocket Bunny RX-7The front overfenders retain the factory styling cue around the vent area which is nice.  The sharp line and cutout above that is pretty aggressive but we think it looks good and we can argue it’s aerodynamically functional since it will theoretically relieve pressure in the fenderwell therefore increasing front downforce.
Rocket Bunny RX-7The rear overfenders are FAT!  Sticking out almost 4″ wider on each side we’re gonna be able to stick some monster rubber under there!  We’ve never been big fans of the void where the gas cap needs to be though.  We’ve deliberated shaving that area and relocating the gas fill neck but that’s still TBD.
Rocket Bunny RX-7The sideskirts fit nicely and follow the contour of the door.  They are also LOW!  We don’t know how we’re gonna get a jack under this thing, which is to say we’re not getting a jack under this thing.  Some other modifications to something will have to be made so we don’t make working on this car completely impractical.  Also TBD.
Rocket Bunny RX-7No Rocket Bunny kit would be complete without a sick duckbill rear spoiler!  Here’s ours.  A big rear wing would be more functional from an aerodynamic perspective and who knows if this spoiler adds anything but drag but we’re gonna stick it on for now because this is street car still and a big functional rear wing looks ridiculous on the street.  The whole kit will be bolted on–not molded in–so in an ideal world we’ll have our “street trim” with the spoiler above and “race trim” with a real wing.
Rocket Bunny RX-7We are going to have [paint and body] professionals fit the kit up and modify the rear fenderwells to accommodate wider wheels and tires but we couldn’t resist trying on some of the new body pieces that would fit without modification.  You can see the bumper support we mentioned earlier underneath the stock bumper cover that also has to be removed–leaving the front end a little more vulnerable.
