Project V8 RX-7: Part 14 – Going Wide with Rocket Bunny’s new FD3S Widebody Aero Kit

,

Rocket Bunny RX-7We’re going to have to find somewhere else to hide our intake and relay box with the larger front opening of the Rocket Bunny kit.  The bumper matches up very nicely to the hood and headlights.  The Rocket Bunny bumper also introduces a little 240esque opening on the top side of the bumper which we think looks pretty cool but our gray engine bay is going to need some attention so that you can’t see in there.
Rocket Bunny RX-7When we first saw the renderings of the kit but weren’t fully committed to it we wondered if we would be able to just purchase the front bumper alone because we did like the styling.  The answer is maybe, with a little work by someone who is not us.  The front overfenders overlap onto the front bumper but it’s not a separate piece like we thought it might have been in the renderings and pictures.  We’re not sure if the kit’s pieces are even available separately, but if they were a competent body shop could probably modify the bumper pretty easily.  You can also see how well the front bumper matches up to the stock quarter panel.

A Professional Fenderectomy

To install wider wheels and tires and fully take advantage of the Rocket Bunny kit’s extra width we need to cut away the stock fenders for added clearance.  In the front of the car this is pretty easy because there are only the removable quarter panels to cut and plastic lining on the inside can be easily removed.  In the rear however the inner fender well is steel and an integrated part of the chassis welded to the outer fender and body.  We headed over to nearby EK Autoworx in Carson, California to let them handle the real cutting, beating and welding on the chassis we lacked the confidence to attempt on our own.

Rocket Bunny RX-7We’ve seen a number of nice vehicles roll in–and more importantly roll out of that shop to know these guys know what they’re doing!  For now we aren’t looking for paint yet, we just need the rear fenders of the RX-7 opened up to fit bigger wheels and tires.  We showed them the diagram below to illustrate what we wanted to do…
We want to remove the shaded area of the stock rear fenders to allow maximum wheel travel with wider wheels and tires we plan to get.  The fender wells need to be completely sealed up to prevent water from getting trapped inside the body and doing its water thing.
