Project V8 RX-7: Part 4 – Dressing the E-Rod

,

The FEAD kit includes all those missing pieces on the front of the engine, all the brackets, belts, instructions and a quilt of individually labeled and compartmentalized hardware making installation a 30 minute job, tops!

Everything included in the CTS FEAD kit.  Besides the obvious things like the alternator, A/C and power steering pumps you get the the brackets belts, pulleys and even the pain in the ass stuff to source like the bolts.

The FEAD kit comes with complete instructions and clearly labeled hardware.   Even cavemen can do this!

The power steering pump is made by ToyoDa, one of the belts is made my MitsubOshi!  Later Mike dropped knowledge on me about Toyoda…  Go Google it!

The A/C compressor comes without fittings and there is no provision for it in the wiring harness but that should be a simple enough fix once we get to that later.  The AC operation will be integrated into the FD’s wiring.

Fully installed FEAD kit and no leftover parts!  Note the power steering pump reservoir is in place now, but that will need to be relocated to the engine compartment later to clear the hood.

There are also a number of transmission options to choose from for your E-Rod LS3, none of which are included with the kit.  The only provision included is a flexplate for an automatic transmission—which we won’t be needing.  Apart from the transmission itself (which we will address in a subsequent article) we still need a starter, bellhousing, clutch and flywheel—great opportunities to upgrade!

Clutch options for an LS engine are wide and varied, with applications available for any use.  While we can foresee trips to the drag strip and road course in Project V8 RX-7’s future, she’ll primarily be a street car—an L.A. street car!  That means everyday driveability is a must!
