Project V8 RX-7: Part 4 – Dressing the E-Rod

,

For the task we looked no further than ACT’s new twin disc clutch kit for the 2010 Camaro SS.  The kits come with a flywheel, 2 customizable discs (street, race or combination) and choice of 3 pressure plates allowing for quite a few configurations to suit most applications.

ACT’s twin disc clutch kit for the 2010 Camaro comes with everything above!  A lightweight forged steel flywheel, a heavy duty higher clamp force pressure plate and streetable discs.  The discs use a semi metallic organic friction material for smooth engagement with a marcel spring to lengthen engagement travel, also to smooth engagement.  The light unsprung hubs on the discs are easy on the syncros and aid fast shifting.  The center floater plate is support by a strap drive for quietness.  Although this is the smoothest and most streetable of the ACT twin discs, the clutch can still hold 875 lb/ft of torque!

We chose a combination of 2 street discs with a Heavy Duty pressure plate which is theoretically the smoothest engaging nearest to stock pedal effort selection available for the twin disc clutch kit.  While it is the lightest duty arrangement available, it’s still capable of supporting 875 ft/lbs of torque!

The ACT clutch and flywheel comes with an alignment tool and lubricant for the transmission input shaft.

The pressure plate is quite a beefy item and is SFI rated for safety.

The pressure plate has triple drive straps for strength.  These are not likely to fail!

A very innovative feature of the clutch is the strap driven center floater plate.  Twin discs are usually noisy and emit chinging noises due the the floating center plate banging around on the clutch drive splines and hitting the disc because there is nothing to maintain the clutch air gap to the floater.  The strap drive holds the floater consistently in the middle of the stack up and keeps it from moving and banging around.  This makes the ACT twin disc as quiet as a regular clutch!

For the bellhousing, rather than a cast aluminum stock part we chose to go with a high-grade spun steel SFI approved QuickTime bellhousing.  Sure, there’s nothing too sexy about a bellhousing, but there IS something sexy about our legs and peace of mind that clutch and flywheel shrapnel aren’t going to scatter through them in the event of a failure!  Not all aftermarket bellhousing are created equal either; Quicktime prides themselves on their “spun” cone design.  Their patented spin forging process involves pouring molten steel into a mold that ismspun while a mandrel forms its shape.  Laser cut flanges are added and the final assembly is CNC machined and guaranteed parallel and centered to within .003″.  This accuracy translates to less drivetrain wear and resistance.

The QuickTime bellhousing comes with an engine plate and necessary hardware.  It is also SFI approved as a scatter shield.  Most of QuickTime’s bellhousings are certified at 85,000psi, which is the equivalent of a 30lb flywheel scattering at 800ft/lbs and 10,000rpm!  This is also strong enough to earn my personal NUT certification standard!

Don’t forget to install the engine plate BEFORE the clutch and flywheel like we did the first time!
