Redline Time Attack – Round 5 – Chicago

,

Daniel O’Donnell pilots the Professional Awesome! Evo VII to the Street AWD victory. The team name reminds me of Napolean Dynamite for some strange reason….

Apparently someone told the Street Tire guys that there was plenty of action, but little drama. They must have listened as when the track went hot for their T.A. session the drama unfolded like the final moments of a day-time talk show! The Street Tire AWD class brought the sounds of Cameron Benner’s Cobb STi bouncing off the rev limiter and as he broke the plane they called out a 1:35.093; in attempting to improve on that time he was rewarded with an oil cooler line failure and an engine fire…. Luckily enough Cameron caught it quickly and got it doused preventing further damage. Living up to their name Professional Awesome! (god that reminds me of Napoleon Dynamite for some reason) laid down an unbeatable 1:34.727 to dethrone Cameron for the weekend and not far behind Todd Reid in the Fortune Auto Evo posted a 1:35.635 to finish off the podium spots.

The funny part of this story is that when Cameron Benner got out of the car because of the fire, the corner worker handed him the fire extinguisher. Apparently it was a do-it-yourself corner…  Luckily the damage was minimal and Cameron was fine!

Amidst the mayhem the Street Tire FWD guys were rolling 2 deep, William Chan in his twin charged Honda Civic put the smack down with a record setting 1:35.986 and try as he might, Michael Ostby was outgunned in his naturally aspirated Acura RSX with a 1:39.549.

Despite having a complex setup, William Chan’s Twin Charged Civic smashed the previous Street FWD record with a 1:35.986 lap.

Chicago local Ryan Weddle in his 240SX was quietly perfecting his line and rattled off his best time of the weekend of 1:40.011 to clinch the top spot in Street RWD. The oil fire was a precursor of things to come as after laying down a 2nd place worthy 1:40.085 Gregory Haye’s Challenge/Bridgestone S2000 spewed it’s guts on the track. Ian Stewart was able to squeak out a 1:40.310 to round out 3rd in Street Tire RWD.

The Challenge/Bridgestone S2000 is not only fast, but hella flush approved Y0!

The session was cut short after the Challenge S2000 oiled down part of the track and parked itself in a rather precarious spot. Just moments later the Honda Civic of WIlliam Chan spun on the black ice and narrowly missed the S2000 and just  when we thought we were in the clear the Mitsubishi Evo of Justin Mathews looped it in the same spot and clipped the S2000 on his way in to Chan’s Civic. While all drivers were unhurt we cannot say the same for their cars…

We here at MotoIQ always preach safety! Just because time attack is not a wheel to wheel race does not mean you wont crash…. The moral here…. Put a cage in your track car or risk a ride in the meat wagon!
