Ideally when tig welding stainless steel, the best practices is to flood the interior of the tube with argon gas, this is called back purging.  This prevents the inside of the tube from oxidizing during the welding process.  However when welding big large diameter tubes like turbo exhaust systems, it is sometimes difficult to keep the pipe properly back purged especially with many tack welded joints.  In that case a flux is used on the inside of the pipe to help block the air and reduce oxidation.

Solar flux is one of the best fluxes to use for stainless welding.  When subjected to heat, the flux creates a shielding gas layer as well as dissolving oxidation in the area as it melts and vaporizes.  Costa applies the Solar flux to both inner sides of the pipes to be joined.

Here are what the holes are for!  Costa tack welds the tubes through the holes.  Using the hose clamp is more secure than magnetic clamps ,especially on non magnetic tubes!  Its better than blocks and sand bags as well for making things really accurate and fast.

The tack welds before the clamp is removed.  This is a really good idea!
