Wrench Tips: Pick the Correct Screwdriver

A JIS Driver

A JIS Drive screw also has a 57 degree taper, but to prevent the operator from having to shove with all his might to keep the screw from camming out, does not have a flattened head on the driver and in the recession.  This allows for maximum torque to be applied without the driver getting rejected from the recession and workshops to remain their PG rating (well, at least not in anger).  The rub here is that while a JIS driver will remove a Phillips screw, a Phillips driver on a JIS screw will always result in tears.  A JIS driver ironically usually works better on Phillips screws than a Phillips driver too!

JIS Screwdrivers come in 3 common sizes a;  #1, #2, and #3 as pictured here.

So, there you have it.  Pay attention to your screws when removing and you’ll probably save yourself a lot of anguish and practice with the vice grips.

  1. Bought myself Vessel Impacta screwdrivers because of a comment on Motoiq a while ago. Best screwdrivers I have, built like a brick shithouse too.
