A Ride with VCMC AutoCross!

,

The most popular car model on the course this day was Mazda's venerable Miata. David's 1995 Miata appeared on the course with multiple drivers and runs in STS. If I read the results correctly, David got the fastest time for his car and the 8th fastest raw time for the course. I wonder if being the course designer means getting an extra PAX handicap!

This car is driven by David and Tim. It's a 1989 BMW 325i and from the sound of it on the course, a supercharger has taken up residence under the hood. It runs in SM class and was great fun to watch out on the course.

Running in STX is Natalie's 2015 Subaru BRZ. The BRZ/FR-S was the second most popular car seen out on the course!

Dimitri's HS classed 2014 Ford Fiesta ST looked stunning. I was parked between Dimitri and Joe (the covershot BRZ) and the three cars were all running on snow tires. Two of the three of us had newer rubber which gave a definite advantage. One of us was also taking photographs which must have been a mental distraction, don't you think? Perhaps that is enough excuses for the dismal performance we got in the completely stock RX-8 with it's low mid-range power, limited low end grunt, yet spectacular 9000 RPM redline. By the way, the event was hugely fun. Understeer/oversteer all day long – what more could you ask for? Maybe a bit more grip …

Seriously, these puddles were huge!

VCMC Motorsport Club was founded in 1982 to promote high performance vehicles and motorsports. It was the first Asian led motorsport club in North America. The two men initiating this Vancouver based club were Sam O'Young and Joe Cheng. If those names sound familiar, they should be. Run over to your motorsport library and grab Ross Bentley's book, Winning Autocross Techniques, off of your shelf, start flipping through the pages, and you will find their names in the acknowledgements! The club is a member of CACC (Confederation of Autosport Clubs), the official sanctioning body of amateur motorsports in BC) and thus FIA. Anyone with any car can join VCMC, fees to participate in events are quite reasonable and like all motorsport there is an expectation for participants to volunteer throughout the event. At the end of March the club will be hosting it's annual Velocity Driver Training day – an opportunity to learn and improve your own skills at pushing your car and yourself to the limit. This Warm-Up event was very well organized and executed. Experienced members were available throughout the day for ride-alongs and to share their knowledge. The wet weather simply enhanced the opportunity to get out and brush off the winter blues with some great car control exercises. Learning car control in the wet absolutely enhances your ability in the dry.

VCMC is looking forward to hosting the 2017 ASN Canada FIA Canadian AutoSlalom Championship. They are looking forward to having a great turnout with drivers from across Canada and the United States participating and competing for the National Championshiop. We hope to see you there!
