Attacking Time: James Houghton’s Integra Type R

,

Here you get a good view of the Special Projects Motorsports rear wing and diffuser. The aero absolutely changed the appearance of the car but also the handling. Improvements in both areas. To the back of the photo you can see the Houghton's Honda S2000. James wasn't doing double driving duty; Vern was tracking it. For the last three years his dad, Vern, has been out driving and putting down some awesome times. That's Tom Glogowski's R-Division #111 Civic Si with the white and red stripe livery. Aero has become more and more important to the Type R. Special Projects Motorsports is the source of the splitter, the 58” wing, diffuser and side skirts. The canards fit right in – they are homemade. This was installed by Jimmy and Eric. As speeds have increased the realization and the need for enhanced safety equipment has become a much needed resource, if not mandatory for competition. Keeping Jimmy planted in the driver’s seat is a Sparco Pro ADV seat and the steering wheel is also a Sparco product. Strapping him to the seat is a TRS six point harness. He drives with a Bell SA helmet, Hans Device, Sparco FIA fire suit with Simpson shoes and gloves. The car now has an OMP fire suppression system which is a valuable resource that everyone hopes they never require, but it is great to know it is there if necessary. R-Division installed a 6 point roll bar after the 2013 season and this coming winter a full roll cage will be installed.

Functional and good looks. What more do you need? The splitter is from Special Projects Motorsports but the Canard are custom home made items.
From the dash back this is a race car. The interior has been stripped down to metal, fire suppression system installed, six point harness, and the six point roll bar will change to a full cage when R-Division gets the car in the off season.

This build took place in the spring and that added some time pressure to the crew at R-Division, because Jimmy took a break from the car and his work to marry the love of his life, Kaitlyn. Back from their honeymoon before local competition began the final touches were applied to the car. The Wednesday before competition R-Division was out at TMP testing the car. On their second lap the track black flagged them for excessive noise. Unfortunately, they would have come in without the black flag because a key exhaust component had broken, giving them an open exhaust which they could not repair trackside. That is what testing is for, to find the weaknesses, so back to the shop where the exhaust was repaired and strengthened.

They headed out to the first CSCS event of the year which was at the newly designed Driver Development Track at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (Mosport). This track has always been an Ontario favourite. It does not have the intensity or speed of the Grand Prix track, but it is awesome in its own right and with the track expansion, new paving, and new facilities it is better than ever.

After warming up the car Jimmy did a hot lap of 1:35 and then lost fourth gear. Literally, every tooth had been stripped from fourth. One of his R-Division teammates, Joshua Bannon, lent Jimmy his 274 WHP naturally aspirated K24 swapped Civic. Jimmy placed first in Unlimited FWD but did not attain the times he was hoping for in the now 520 WHP Acura Integra Type R.

When you head out to an event as an individual, you meet a lot of great people. When you head out as a team like R-Division does, you meet a lot of great people and you have immediate support to help out when needed. Here's Joshua Bannon's yellow Civic (Josh loaned Jimmy the Civic when the Type R lost fourth gear at the first competition event), and Derek Pawlowski's Type R. The nose of Jimmy's Type R is just entering the scene. This pic is from the 2013 CSCS final event.
