Building an FA20 Race Engine for Michele Abbate: Part 2

,

After blending the top cut into the combustion chamber, Howard then blended the throat cut into the port bowl and smoothed out any casting flash in the bowl.

Now the intake air and the exiting exhaust have a nice smooth flow path into and out of the combustion chamber.

Howard first organized the Supertech valves, valve seals, Piper retainers, spring seats, springs and keepers in anticipation of assembling the heads.

First, the Supertech valve seals were pressed into place.

Next, the valve stems were oiled to lubricate them for installation.

The intake and exhaust valves were placed into the head.

The steel spring seats were dropped into place at the bottom of the valve spring pocket. The seat prevents the valve spring from eating into the soft aluminum head.

  1. I’m curious why the pistons were coated after wpc treatment. Wouldn’t the tiny dimples caused by wpc be smoothed out or removed by the coating building up? Was wpc just for strength benefits? I’m also confused because I thought I’d read wpc treatment could be done to coated surfaces. Did they mean something harder like chrome?

Thanks in advance for any reply

    1. I was using the WPC for ring groove freeness and longevity and to reduce the galling of the piston up there. WPC can be done to stuff like nitriding and hard chrome but it will remove organic coatings.
