DRIVEN: 2012 McLaren MP4-12C

12C key FOBThe Key FOB is covered in carbon while the driver’s side sill has a nice brushed aluminum plaque with the car’s city of origin on it.

12C dashThe Interior is very simple with a Carrera GT styled floating center console which houses all of the important driving controls and a NAV system instead of a manual shift lever.  Our car had a suede-covered dash which I found very tasteful over the standard leather dash.
12C cupholdersBeneath the floating center console is a power outlet and 2 real cup holders to appeal to Americans.
12C seatsThe leather seats with black suede inserts are simple, sleek, supportive, and attractive.

Once seated, the cockpit is simple, clever, and driver-focused very much like an NSX.  The seats are surprisingly narrow and give a lot of lateral support.  But the supportive side bolsters push your arms forward which isn’t a problem if you’re the driver and have a steering wheel to hold on to, but as a passenger it can be slightly awkward.

12C steering wheelThe driver interface is very driver focused with a large centered analog tach (which is ideal for any driver’s car) flanked by digital screens that display all of the relevant information for the driver.  I really like the clean look of the steering wheel but while the perforated leather was probably intended to improve grip, I found it to have more of a plastic feeling slightly thinner than I would have liked.
12C PedalsThe foot well is nicely centered but a bit narrow due to the high sills of the carbon tub.  There’s a large dead-pedal to rest your foot on and the billet aluminum pedals are tall and nicely positioned.

I was very impressed with the driving position in the 12C.  Very rarely do I drive a car where the telescoping steering was not adjusted all of the way back.  I also did not have the seat anywhere near the rearward limit of adjustment or excessive reclining of the backrest to fit a helmet with my long torso that belongs to someone who is 6’ 4”.  I was blown away that I could find my ideal driving position and had head room to spare even with a helmet on.  There are not many cars out there, even an M3, that gives me this much head room; in a 47.2” tall car no less!
