Global Time Attack Round 3 – The Chicago Recap

,

We also saw some high winds Saturday morning. The New York based Performance Motorsport crew experienced quite a setback. Their large stacker trailer awning decided to remove it’s feet from the ground under a heavy gust and came slamming down on their C6 Z06. The leg smashed the rear window and then impaled a tail light while another leg of the awning narrowly missed their Unlimited RWD prepped Nissan 370Z. We thought for sure the C6 was done for the weekend however later in the day they showed up with all of the rear glass removed and duct tape around the window moulding to turn some laps. That’s the kind of attitude you find in Time Attack!

Despite the setback of no window, the still got the vette back on track. No holding back the Performance Motorsport boys from New York!

For the second session most competitors were out to push the envelope and all eyes were on GST. It was early in the day yet but I was certainly wondering if they could even get remotely close to where they wanted to be. In the first session they bumped and jumped their way to a time in the low 1:32 range, some 10 seconds SLOWER than they were shooting for. Could can pressure alone get them the setup they needed to keep the car on the ground? They appeared to be flying around the track that’s for damn sure

Apparently the GST Impreza is a carnivore. Here it consumes the Chik-Fil-A RX8 of Frank Hart.

Dan puts the power down now that he has two new headgaskets and a new trans.

Also out on track was Professional Awesome for the first time of the day. Whilst observing P.A. turn some laps I certainly noticed some serious inside wheel spin heading through the turn 1/2 complex. It seemed that Dan was wrestling with it for sure. Also moving along quite quickly was Jeremy Rohrs in his “backup” car, the SSP R35 GTR. I sure would like to have an R35 as a back up car, regardless Jeremy would turn his fastest time in the second session with a 137.180

Jeremy “my back up car is an R35 GTR” Rohrs brought out his… You guessed it… R35 GTR to compete in Limited AWD

And before we forget let’s see if the damper changes paid off for GST…. John Naderi (nads, GTA grand poobah, and all around nice guy) came down with the time sheet and congratulated Jeff Westphal and Mike Warfield on their new record. Prior to GST the fastest an Unlimited AWD car had been around Autobahn was Tarzan Yamada in the Crawford STi. Tarzan pushed the wagon around the circuit in 1:26.735. GST DESTROYED that record by going 1:23.594. Quite simply after confirming this data with Autobahn staff it is the second fastest a production based car has traveled around this circuit. For reference the ONLY production car that has gone faster is Andy Pilgrim in a race version of the Corvette C6 that is VERY similar to the C6R. This puts the GSTeam in serious company and their record for the class was quite simply an amazing feat just 2 sessions into GTA.

“What did you say that time was?”
I said it was a new record…. 1:23.594!

I say the GST sled is hellafunctional and damn near hellaflush.
