How to Pass The Drift League Pro Am Tech Inspection!

We and many other racing organizations require that all oil, fuel and coolant lines that pass through the driver’s compartment be behind a metal or other approved heat shields to prevent the driver from being sprayed with hot or flammable liquids in case a line leaks or blows.

Although this car had a shield around it’s accusump, the lines going to it were unshielded.  We also required the shield to cover the ends of the accusump as well.

A big reason for cars failing tech was poorly mounted seats, lap harnesses, shoulder harnesses, and anti-sub belts.  Seats should use sturdy side mounts as most FIA seats are certified with the side mounts. The part of the car that the seat mounts bolt to, should be at least as sturdy as the OEM mounts which means a solid structure welded to the cars main unibody reinforced areas.

Seat belts and sub belts should be mounted following the guidelines put forth in the rule book. We saw some really unsafe seat mount and harness installs and fortunately everyone got them fixed before the event. These fails could have been avoided by a simple read through of the rules.

Having the fuel system totally sealed off from the driver’s compartment by a firewall is also important for passing tech inspection.

We were almost going to fail this car but we realized that the fuel cell and the entire fuel system were placed inside this fabricated aluminum box. Pass!  Also, we require that either the stock fuel tank or an FIA/SFI certified fuel cell be used.

We did give some waivers on a few fuel cells that can be certified if you pay extra for the cert but didn’t have the cert when the drivers were able to prove to use that their cell was the exact same part number as a certifiable cell.

So follow these tips and tech inspection for The Drift League or any other race organization will not only be a piece of cake but in preparing for it, you will have a safer car as well!  See you at our next event!
