MPTCC Round 4: Buttonwillow 2013 Season Finale

,

Putting the kids to work!  If you recall, the G20 was in bad need of a tire swap.  The tire shop opened at 8:00am, but unfortunately the first practice session of the day was at the same time.  Oops!  The MotoIQ crew would have to use the qualifying session to set tire pressures.

The practice session on Sunday was uneventful as Justin was the only competitor to take advantage of it.  The MotoIQ Project G20 Racercar was sidelined with bad tires, Michele and the Scion Racing/Dynamic Autosports tC had packed it up and gone home already, and Edik was still trying to figure out his electrical issues.  Though it was not much of a concern for him, since he had completed Saturday's race and scored the necessary amount of points needed to secure his 2013 championship.

With brand new tires that needed to be scrubbed in and with guess-timated tire pressures the MotoIQ Project G20 did not have the best qualifying results, but it was something the team had already accounted for.  With only one other competitor having a working race car, the worst the G20 would start the race on Sunday would be second place.  So the 2:16.373 we timed with a sundial was really not an issue.

Justin on the other hand was confident and driving the Rockstar Garage / Buddy Club S2000 better than ever!  He would take the pole position from Steve by clocking his fastest lap of the weekend; 2:04.111.

Not sure how many of you have blown up engines in the past, but one thing that sticks out with me is that they usually feel like they are running super good right before they let go.  If you ever find yourself saying, “Damn, my ride is seriously boning out today!”.  Be sure to not stay in it to win it for too long…and such was the case for Justin and the S2000.  Right after clocking its best lap of the weekend, the Rockstar Garage / Buddy Club S2000 lost propulsion and was now purely being powered by momentum.  You can imagine the emotional roller coaster Justin and his team was going through after qualifying P1 and then watching their car roll to a stop in the middle of the track.

Once the car was towed back to the Rockstar Garage pits it would not start and sounded like it was missing an entire cylinder.  The team started going down the diagnostic list and after some tense moments, the fact the S2000 would not be making it back out on track was starting to set in.  The other MPTCC drivers gathered round and helped load the S2000 on the trailer for the final time in the 2013 season.

Now it was time to get on with the final race of the season and to give away some hard earned hardware!
