Nerd’s Eye View: 2012 LA Auto Show

,

This is the engine that should have come in the Subaru BRZ: the FA20.  It’s a direct-injection engine using a twin-scroll turbocharger from Honeywell Turbo Technologies.  Hey Subaru, if you’re listening, give us a STI BRZ with this engine!

The turbo sits down and low on the engine.  This setup still uses a separate compressor bypass valve, so the tuners can upgrade to their heart’s content with relative ease.

The cutaway of the turbo shows the divided turbine housing used in twin-scroll setups.  Because the turbo is mounted so low, it has this cast oil drain sump similar to what Porsche uses for the 911 Turbo.

The FA20 still uses TGVs.
