On the 8th Day – Falken Tires S13

The Nissan R200 differential is plenty strong to take V8 punishment.  This tough diff can take up to 1000 hp.  A Greddy back cover gives more oil capacity.  An OS Giken 2-Way LSD is used and tuned to maximize forward grip.  Many pro drifters prefer 1.5-way diffs but Dai like the action of a 2-way.  The differential is mounted in SPL Pro solid aluminum bushings which help eliminate wheel hop.

SPD’s Scott Dodgion went to work, fabricating mounts and headers to fit the LS2 into the S13 chassis.  The motor was mounted as low and rearward as possible.  In the meantime the wrecked Lexus was also delivered to SPD and stripped to salvage as many parts as possible for the new car.  Team Falken’s Steve Sprague, Owen Orrego and even Dai himself labored around the clock to get the S13 done.

Willwod Superlite Billet Calipers are used.  A lightweight solid rotor is used with an alloy hat for minimum weight.  The second rear mounted caliper is on an independent hydraulic circuit connected to a hand lever.  This is used as a turning brake much like what is found in a rally car.

Willwood front brakes also use solid rotors on alloy hats.  Drift car’s brakes need to be powerful and responsive but do not need to do repeated high speed stops, thus the rotor selection is done for light weight and not fade resistance.

Dai’s office. The big lever to the left of the shifter is the handle for the turning brake.  The lever activates the single master cylinder below it.  Sparco seats and harnesses are used.  Switches are found in a pod behind the shifter.  A Motec digital dash is used and tied into the ECU.  The dash also doubles as a data logger.  A Sparco steering wheel is used as a tiller.  The doors are lightweight fiberglass.
