Project AE86, Repairing the Chassis

After the spot welds were drilled out, Zach uses a chisel to knock the lower core support loose.   We found that the spot welds had fatigued and broken and one whole side was not even attached to the chassis anymore!

The new reproduction part is stronger and a better design than the old part.  The old part was three small stampings welded together.  The new part is one piece with a generous radius and is thicker than the stock.  Zack drilled the new part for spot welds, sanded off the e-coat in the areas to be welded and applied weld through primer for rust resistance.

Here is the new core support prepped and ready to weld.  It fit perfectly like an OEM part.  We were surprised with the quality.

  1. That is super cool that good quality repair parts can still be found for that chassis. Rust and bondo are the absolute worst thing to find when trying to modify any car.
