Project EVO X, Keeping the oil and SST tranny cool!
Like the transmission, we wanted to retain the high quality factory engine oil cooler, just adding to its capacity.  The first thing we did was to relocate the stock cooler from horizontal to vertical like this to make room for the V-mounted oil cooler we will be adding.

We mounted the big Setrab cooler underneath the factory oil cooler.

Once the transmission has sufficient cooling, engine oil cooling will probably also become an issue.  We know this from experience with our other EVO project cars and track driven turbo cars as well.  Our objective will be to keep the engine oil from reaching past the mid 200 degree level.  Since overcooling of the oil in street driving conditions is not a good idea due to the formation of sludge and acids from retained water caused by too low of an oil temperature, we decided to run an additional cooler in line with the stock thermostatically controlled factory oil cooler.

We added this sheet aluminum left side mount/air guide to support the new cooler and the relocated factory cooler as well as to force air to both coolers.  An aluminum stay on the right side holds the lower cooler up in place attaching it to the bumper brace.

Since space up front in an EVO X is at a premium, we decided to mount our additional cooler V mount style with the factory cooler.  We have had several friends experiment with V mounting with good results.

We had previously installed a bunch of Defi gauges to the inside of the car.  We installed this oil filter sandwich adapter and sensor to monitor oil temperature.  This is how we noted high oil temp during track driving.

To do this we first had to mount our factory cooler from a sideways position to straight up and down.  Tehcnosquare’s  Howard Watanabe fabricated a few brackets to relocate the factory cooler in the up/down orientation and cant it slightly forward.

Once again Earl’s Swivel Seal fittings and  Pro-Lite 350 hoses are used to plumb the cooler.

We then mounted a Setrab 13 row oil cooler horizontally under then factory cooler in a shallow V orientation to the stock cooler.  With ducting, high pressure air will be forced through the factory cooler as well as the Setrab, the air to the Setrab exiting under the cooler and out into the front wheel opening through louvers in the fender liner.

  1. Hi MotoIQ,
I have a 2009 Evo 10 (sst) that I would love to make track ready. I was wondering if you have a list of all the parts you used to keep the sst and engine oil cool or if there is an available bolt on kit.

    1. Julian, you can purchase all the parts easily and install it yourself. Ping me at Evo Dave on Instagram
