Project EVO X, Keeping the oil and SST tranny cool!
Since the stock oil cooler has a thermostatic control we ran our additional cooler in line with the stock cooler.  We used an Earl’s AN to tubing adapter so we could attach an AN fitting to the stock steel cooler lines.

As a last step, Howard Watanabe of Technosquare fabricated this ducting.  Air is funneled through openings in the bumper to the coolers.  Some air flows through the factory cooler and some air flows through the V-mounted Setrab cooler and out the bottom.  This makes the most use of the space.

To monitor oil temperature, a Defi  oil temperature gauge was installed with the sending unit going into a sandwich adaptor between the engine block and factory oil filter.

All plumbing was also supplied by Earl’s with Pro-Lite hose and Swivel Seal AN fittings.  Oil is your engine’s life blood and you do not want to cobble something up out of dubious hose and hose clamps scrounged up from your local corner auto parts store!

To connect the Earl’s lines to the factory hard lines we used Earl’s tubing to AN adaptors.  These slick parts uses a flared end and a compression fitting to make a sano leak free transition from the factory hardline to our high performance plumbing.

Our EVO X now bristles with heat exchangers in the front of the car.  Hopefully these coolers will keep both engine and transmission fluid temps under control at the track.

Once our cooler was plumbed Howard set about fabricating some ductwork from the bumper fascia to the coolers to ensure that they would get a good amount of airflow.

With our engine and transmission fluids now getting some much needed additional cooling in our next steps for Project EVO X we will work at getting more power while still keeping the car daily driveable.  We will probably find that we will need better cooling for the engine coolant but we will cross that bridge when we get there.

  1. Hi MotoIQ,
I have a 2009 Evo 10 (sst) that I would love to make track ready. I was wondering if you have a list of all the parts you used to keep the sst and engine oil cool or if there is an available bolt on kit.

    1. Julian, you can purchase all the parts easily and install it yourself. Ping me at Evo Dave on Instagram
