If your engine has oil squirters like our B18C1, it's also best practice to verify that the piston skirt has adequate clearance for the oil squirter. You would be amazed at how many people fail to check this and end up shearing their oil squirters off which leads to a lack of oil pressure and eventually the demise of the engine. On most Hondas, the oil squirters can be bent to clear the piston skirt. However, the squirters can not be reshaped on engines like the Nissan SR20DET. Instead, a notch must be designed into the skirt for oil squirter clearance. Fortunately, our JE pistons had adequate clearance due to the long rod configuration positioning the piston up further in the bore at BDC. |

Following the advice of some forum goers who swore this was an upgrade, we installed a new Acura Integra Type-R (B18C5) oil pump, to complete the rebuild of our long rod, high compression bottom end. The strange thing is, Honda lists the same part number for both the B18C5 and B18C1 oil pumps, 15100-P72-A01. I'm not sure what happened here, but I guess we needed a new oil pump anyhow. Perhaps one of our MotoIQ readers can enlighten us? |
While you're pondering that question, we'll be doing the final assembly on Project Honda Civic EJ's cylinder head, which will feature a series of trick Skunk 2 valvetrain components. In the meantime, you can check out our Project Honda Civic EJ's sponsor sites below as well as some of the project's past articles. Enjoy!
