Project S550 Mustang GT: Part 6 – Installing a Radium Engineering Coolant Expansion Tank and Dual Oil Catch Can

,

While not a performance feature, the stitching pattern looks much cooler than the stock unit and also matches our interior accent stitching perfectly.

To remove the stock wheel, a small screwdriver is pushed into the holes one both sides of the plastic trim.  This compresses the air bag springs and allows you to remove and unclip the airbag. Remember to unhook your battery first and give it about a half hour before starting.  The last thing you want to do is deploy your air bag while trying to remove it.  From there, the steering wheel bolt is removed.  Once removed from the car, all the factory controls can be removed and remounted on the new steering wheel.  Our wheel came with the stock wiring harness already installed so we just had to transfer our controls and trim pieces.  Once these components were installed, it was just a matter of reinstalling the bolt and clipping back in the airbag.  When clipping the airbag in place its important to ensure none of the wires are pinched.  Once installation was finished, I reconnected the battery an ensured all the controls functioned properly.

Once removed, you can see the subtle differences between the two wheels. The GT350 wheel has a slightly more aggressive design.

With all the controls and trim transferred over the wheel is bolted back up and the airbag can be recommended and pushed into the retaining clips.

Back together and ready for a drive.

Overall, the new wheel feels much better than the stock wheel.  The alcantara has more grip and feels much nicer. This is definitely something that I should have done much earlier.

These few upgrades went a long way in addressing some of the eyesores and issues that have been on my mind with this project for a while. In the next update, this project is about due for some new tires and brakes. Check back to see what we have planned.
