Project STurdteen: Prepping SR20DET Heads with Portflow Design

,

Tom starts the process by clamping the SR20 head to the machine’s table. He uses some fixturing to get the head truly centered. You can see the Dyechem machinist dye that has been applied to the seats so that we can visualize how the Newen cuts.

The Newen begins making cuts!  Notice that it uses a tool head just like a CNC machine rather than poloted cutters or stones like traditional valve seat cutting machines.

Previously, three-angle or even five-angle valve jobs were considered high-performance valve jobs. The Newen is able to achieve much more than that.  A smooth continual radius for the ultimate in non turbulent flow!

The prepping of a cylinder head is a great way to make power. What constitutes good head work, is a good valve job. When a proper valve seal is achieved along with the promotion of flow around the valves and valve seats are the areas where the most power can be gained.

This is because the valve spends the most time around the seat rather than at full lift, so partial lift flow is the most critical for power production.

Tom adjusts the coolant flow to land on the seat itself as the Newen makes its cuts, improving tool life and giving a good super smooth finish.
