Project VehiCross Goes Gambling
Separated at Birth
One of these guys is doing Mustangs right.
Audi Muddy Road
Once we made it to St Helen, we were immediately greeted with dirt and mud. This mud washed out road showed up just half a mile into the rough stuff. The trick was to navigate the left side of the road as the right and middle were way too soft to drive through.
Freed Lincoln
A mistake the charming couple in this Lincoln would find out the hard way. They tried to go through the middle and promptly got stuck. We were able to help get them towed out of the muck. They learned one of the most important tricks in off-roading: don’t be a hero. Just take the easy way out.
Gambler Traffic Jam
A few more miles down the trail, we met a traffic jam.
TURTLE POWER!!!
This was why. Two ponds had formed across the trail and getting through was a challenge. There were a few ways to go. The left line wasn’t as deep, but the mud was softer and easier to get stuck in (as the Crown Vic on General Grabbers learned the hard way). Going right through the deepest water meant less chance of getting stuck in mud, but a much higher chance of getting water somewhere you didn’t want! Clearly the TMNT themed van went with the NFG approach.
Dodge Caravan Getting Stuck
This Caravan damn near made it through, but hit a berm (the bit of grass about 5 feet in front of the van) and it stopped them dead. They were smart enough to put their tow strap on the front bumper BEFORE attempting the mud so rescue was easy.

  1. Those ZJs came with a shitty full time 4WD transfer case with a viscous center section that eventually failed. The NP231s that came in base models were true 4WD (locked front to rear with no differential). Still open diffs front/rear though…
