Project VehiCross Goes GamblingPosted on August 21, 2018August 24, 2018byDave ZipfOnce the main site filled up, most people (us included) had to find a spot on the side of the road and just park it. The camera does a great job of picking up the light, but at 8pm it was already getting quite dark (yeah that’s the moon up there, not the sun). And cold too! It would get to about 20 that night. Fires, lots of layers, and extra blankets in the sleeping bag were a must.Just because the sun has set doesn’t mean it’s time to stop Gambling.Crews poured into camp all the way through midnight. Some were just finding their way into camp, others had claimed a spot, then went out to find some more trails to play in. A few crazy folks even went for rides on their minibikes.It was so cold that night that the remaining ice in our cooler froze solid. Thank god, we had the VehiCross to warm us up first thing in the morning. Not only was the beer frozen, but we had frost all over the sleeping bags and inside of the tent. (And no, we absolutely did not drink and drive. We did all our imbibing around the campfire the night before where we baked potatoes in the campfire with aluminum foil. They were delicious).Once we loaded the gear back into the Isuzu it was time to depart, which meant driving back onto the road, an obstacle in and of itself.The first challenge of the day was to find 15 oil and gas pumps and photograph your car by them. We won’t subject you to all of those photos, but suffice it to say this was a cool scavenger hunt to perform. Those ZJs came with a shitty full time 4WD transfer case with a viscous center section that eventually failed. The NP231s that came in base models were true 4WD (locked front to rear with no differential). Still open diffs front/rear though…Reply
