Sneak Peek: Dave Lemon’s Mazdatrix RX-8

The Kognition rear wing does make downforce, but at Auto Club Speedway, the downforce had to be dialed out to fight understeer. That still isn't the impressive thing to me.

It's the fact that the wing is bolted to the chassis that impresses me. This has been a somewhat rare sight in Production Chassis race cars! Most of the time, the rear wing is only bolted to the trunk/hatch lid and that's it. No rear connection to the chassis other than the deck lid. It's nice to see that this was thought of and employed on the Mazdatrix RX-8.

While I'm back here, I guess I can talk about the fuel system too. The high octane gas is kept in a Fuel Safe race cell that required the spare wheel well to be cut out. It holds 18 gallons and also contains a surge tank.

The fuel passes through a filter first before going on to an Aeromotive A1000 fuel pump that flows over 800 lbs/hr at over 40 PSI at 13.5 volts. That may sound like a lot of fuel, and it is, but for a turbocharged rotary, that's probably normal.

Fuel pressure is controlled by an Aeromotive A1000 fuel pressure regulator that features a 1:1 increase in fuel pressure as boost pressure rises.

Injector and spark timing are controlled by a Haltech P1000 stand alone ECU. It tells the six 1,000cc/min injectors when to open and close and for how long.
