Sneak Peek: The Engines of Formula Drift 2014

,

Showing a turbo 4-banger can still be competitive is Fredric Aasbo.
The 2.7L is force-fed using a combination EFR 8374 and nitrous to put down over 800whp. I don’t think anything is different from last year besides the polished compressor housing on the turbo. I guess if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. One thing to note, the turbo is grabbing cold air from somewhere and not hot engine bay air. Colder is better.
The other guy soldiering on beneath the 4-banger flag is Taka Aono.
A GTX3576R turbocharger helps the Brian Crower stroked 2.6L 2AZ engine produce 670whp. A twin-scroll setup is used for maximum response, hence the two Turbosmart wastegates. Aono knows colder is better too.
This must be Tony Angelo’s car with a 2.55L 2AZ-FE engine. The GTX3576R is somehow making 700whp! Yeah… a GTX3582R is in the plans for more power.
Dean Kearney’s Viper certainly has presence and a big V10.
It has the same number of cylinders as Angelo’s and Tuerck’s FRS’ put together, but still more displacement at 8.3L. Even with the big truck engine in the engine bay (flak jacket on), it takes 700whp to play with this crowd, so a blower was added for good measure. For a little extra sauce, an NX Express kit sprays some laughing gas to push this engine over 1000bhp. To handle all that goodness, JE pistons take the pounding and Magnaflow headers handle the exhaust flow.
