Sneak Peek: The Engines of Formula Drift 2014

,

Representing the Blue Oval crowd and Nitto Tire is Vaughn Gittin Jr.
The 410 CI V8 engine from Ford Racing/Roush Yates is packing around 850bhp.
Darren McNamara appears to be content with his V8.
The 415 CI small block Chevy does put out around 720whp putting it on par with a fair number of competitors (re: Gittin Jr.). JE pistons at a high 13.5 compression ratio are used in this engine. Rumor has it he’s thinking of forced induction… why do you ask?
Because his teammate Dai Yoshihara has gone turbo. And no, it’s not a turbo 2JZ.
A V8 with a turbo is the next evolution of engine packages in Formula Drift as far as I can tell. Dai has 477 CI of displacement with a massive GTX5018R turbo with twin-scroll turbine housing. This engine uses boost-friendly JE pistons in 10.0 compression ratio versus the 13.5 in DMac’s engine. Each bank of the V8 feeds one half of the turbo improving response. Check out the bellow joints on the exhaust manifolds and how everything is wrapped in insulation. Good things to improve reliability of the entire package. Massive Turbosmart wastegates and BOVs are used. Right now, the car is running really low boost and I’m pretty sure it’s making more power than any other car out there. If/when they decide to turn up the boost, everyone better look out. If you guys read my article on turbo sizing, you can figure out the ballpark power this engine package is capable of.
