Tested! Garrett Advancing Motion Upgraded Intercooler for the EcoBoost Mustang

,

As you can see here, the Garrett intercooler has a consistent 120-150 degree drop of charge temps even when being run hard on the dyno. We ran the Garrett intercooler hard with many runs in an attempt to heat soak it.  The Garrett intercooler was able to drop the intake air temp a minimum of 20 degrees more than stock. Some runs were 50 degrees cooler than stock.

The picture doesn’t tell the whole story though. The bigger core has less pressure drop. The less pressure drop, the less hard the turbine has to work to drive the compressor to make boost. This also reduces backpressure on the engine.

The video above was taken with the Fluke Ti450, and it shows how quickly the intercooler recovers between runs. Notice how the core does not get completely heat soaked even after three back to back runs.

The Garrett Advancing Motion intercooler took longer to heat saturate, 9 back to back pulls instead of just 4 on the stock part- more than twice as many! Even when fully saturated, the temp drop was still much lower than stock. This is due to the higher thermal mass of the heavier bar and plate core.

On a moving car which has more airflow than our dyno fan, the intercooler would be even more effective than this.

Looking at the Garrett Advancing Motion intercooler with the Fluke Thermal Imager, the differences between the Garrett and stock intercooler are immediately apparent. The core of the Garrett intercooler is much cooler, and the core does not get completely heat saturated during a full dyno pull. The core also recovers quicker after a pull.

On a run with a lot of heat soak, the Garrett Advancing Motion intercooler made 22 more hp and 20 lb/ft of torque more than stock.  We were quite impressed, as this was one of the lower powered, heat soaked, worst case runs.

When the intercooler was cooler, the gains were as high as 28 whp!

We were super impressed with the Garrett Mustang intercooler.  It was well made, perfect fitting and simple to install. It gave good, solid gains in power.  We know that with the better charge cooling that the Garrett intercooler provided, the engine could be safely run at higher boost and tuned around the intercooler itself. This would add possibly another 10 or more hp.

In any case, it is usually hard to get free power, which means getting power with no negative side effects. The Garrett intercooler is truly free power; you simply bolt it in and it makes power without drawbacks at all other than it’s not free from a cost standpoint!
