Toyota Tacoma Rock Sliders – Project Tacoma

Functionality

Even with our mishap the at home spray job came out nice.

Visually the sliders look fantastic on our 4×4.  Functionally as steps they work well to assist reaching the middle of the front bed area.  Entering the truck is no different.  At five foot eleven your author simply bypasses the slider and goes front foot into cab.  The trail leg brushes the slider side on entry.  Reversing the process on exit requires throwing your leg out more.  As a functional step these sliders take some getting used to.  They tilt 15 degrees upward to deflect the vehicle off an object in extreme off-roading.  When standing on them there’s a tendency to fall towards the truck.  Which might make your passengers think you’ve bought the worst steps ever or installed them wrong.

The kickout in back is great and functionally as steps the sliders fit that purpose too.

TacomaLeadShot1.jpgWe might not ever use these sliders for their intended purpose.  That would be sort of a shame but it’s nice to know we have the protection.  These rock sliders for the Tacoma are so versatile for about $300 more than the factory option they are a great consideration.

  1. I wonder if the dimple die would be better if it were punched the other way? Giving you some potential extra grip when stepping?

Neat upgrade. I love the aspect of no more door dings, that alone makes them worth every dollar spent!

    1. As it is the configuration works because the bed liner is tacky enough as long as you’ve got some tread on your shoes. I’ve seen your idea incorporated on other types of steps or metal stairs to create an anti-slip surface.

  2. I always had the worst luck with spray cans, either spraying too close and getting runs or too far and the paint would dry before it hit the surface. I did some research and, once I found out about heating the cans up in hot water before spraying, it became much easier to get good results.
