We Check Out AMS Performance’s Turbo Test Rig

A straight exhaust dumps out over the roof of the car. With the pressure measurements at both turbine inlet and outlet of the turbine housings, this setup can also be used to measure exhaust restriction of various cats, mufflers, and exhaust diameters and their effects on power.
On the intake side, this is the first MAF sensor used to measure mass airflow.

There is a second MAF sensor visible on the lower section of this intake pipe. Four locations around the circumference of the intake pipe are used to determine the compressor inlet pressure.

Centrifugal compressors can create some upstream swirl flow so the four measurement locations are required to get a good inlet pressure measurement value. This test setup can also be used to measure the flow restriction of different air filter configurations. A turbo speed sensor is used of course for all the turbo mapping activities!

After exiting the compressor outlet, all the heated air goes through this massive air-to-water intercooler. The intercooler was essentially oversized in order to handle all the flow possible from the big turbos and make sure engine air inlet temps were never an issue.
