World Time Attack Challenge 2012 – Final Competition Day

WTAC, Nemo Racing Pits

As if their 1:25.7400 from Friday was not fast enough, Nemo Racing team owner Chris Eaton and driver Warren Luff were both confident their Evo IX was still leaving some time on the track.  Word around some of the “track-insiders” was that the Nemo-Evo has 3 boost level settings and they were having crankcase ventilation issues preventing them from using their high boost setting.  But apparently they got everything worked out and were ready to let it rip in the later sessions of the day.

We also got word that the Tilton Interiors team had been working all night to fix a head gasket leak that was preventing them from turning up the boost.  The lap times they set on Friday were done with 36 pounds of boost and rumor had it they were planning on throwing a few more pounds at their engine.  We also saw them taping off all the leading edges of their Evo IX in order to reduce every little bit of drag on the car.

WTAC, Cyber Evo, 2012

Of course most of you are wondering where Cyber Evo fits in all of this.  In the morning session Tarzan took the car out and much to everyone's dismay, he immediately brought it back to the pits before crossing the beacon and clocking a lap time.  From the looks of it he was pushing the car, but we can only assume the team did not want to reveal exactly what kind of lap times they were capable of running.

Then in the late afternoon session, all the questions were answered.  The crowd was crowding the pit area and clapping as Tarzan started to roll the car out of the pits.  The car sounded good as he ripped down turn 1 and the rest of the track.  Everyone was looking down to the beginning of the front straight to see if he would bring the car in or stay on track for his first timed lap.  He then passed the pit area and looked to be at WOT, but as soon as he neared the end of the grand stands something let go and a cloud of white smoke followed.  The car blew up the rear diff and had what appeared to be a bad engine bay oil leak.  Tarzan brought the smokey car in and that would be the end of Cyber's title defense.

WTAC, Scorch Racing S15
The Scorch Racing S15 had a good showing on Saturday and shaved a couple tenths off their time.  The 1:28.3290 they ran on Saturday was good enough for fourth place overall.  Keep an eye out on an update on this car's improvements on MotoIQ soon.
