Assuming the builds survived the previous torture test there was one more to decide the winners: the drag race! We're talking about a good old fashioned drag race to see who would lay down the fastest pass and kick the most ass or break in spectacular fashion. The event was held Saturday night and there was a good gap of time from the end of the Time Attack to the start of the drags. The reason for that is because the main straight on the Firebird circuit is the drag strip itself. This gave the teams time to switch from downforce to less drag. It was plain to see how serious the teams were in this competition with the prep work between events and watching them shed bodywork before the drag event was quite entertaining.
Drag (75 points possible)
Can you say fully built? David Bruzewski's Evo8 has an AMS 2.3L stroker, Ross 8.5:1 pistons, Oliver rods, AMS/TMS head studs, ARP main studs, AMS race ported head, Bomba 75mm throttle body, Tomei 280 Pro Cams and Fidanza adjustable cam gears, Supertech +1mm valves, Supertech springs and retainers. This power gets to the wheels via a Shepherd Racing transmission, Exedy/AMS triple metallic clutch, and Torqueline carbon fiber driveshaft. |
The engine is mated to the AMS 850R turbo kit, AMS Race VSR intake manifold, 3″ exhaust, and Tial 38mm wastegate and BOV. AMS Race Intercooler and 3″ piping keep things cool. Fueling is provided by ID1000 injectors and AMS 1000hp fuel system and fuel rail with AEM V2 EMS managing the entire system. Just weeks before the competition this beast laid down 785 AWHP through a cat while at AMS. Would he be able to lay that down when it counted? |
The MAK Auto Nissan Silvia with RB25 swap made 450whp. Despite successful practice sessions throughout the day he was unable to compete in the actual time attack session. We personally helped lay down oil dry on the grid as we pushed him out of the paddock. Turns out an oil supply line had failed and they worked to repair it before the drag race. |
This 3 rotor 20B RX-7 was truly a grassroots effort. The input shaft broke at the autocross course but the tranny was out and fixed in a few hours at a local RX7 forum member's house and back at the track missing only a practice session. No big sponsors, no professional drivers – just a buttload of motorsports enthusiasm and a community of RX-7 supporters. Very freaking awesome! |
With temps in the mid 90's the RX-7 dyno'd at 635whp and 482 ft lbs of torque. This baby doesn't skimp on emissions either, puking up about 30 times as many hydrocarbon ppm allowed to miss out on the 5 bonus points. |
