Caffeine and Octane – Atlanta, GA

,

Here is a unique and quite expensive take on table etiquette that stole my attention. I cannot conceptualize a world where this table is, in any way, efficient.  I definitely would not want to drag it out to a car show on a foggy wet day.  All of that and the goofy chair aside, the feature-piece of the table has quite the history!  The table was built by Chuck Beck – he found the engine in a Maserati that was in a building fire. The car was destroyed but the engine was untouched and runs fine.  Ray tells me that it is around 20-25 years old.
This is a Beck Porsche 904 replica.  It weighs about 1500 – 1600 pounds and has a Porsche six cylinder motor in it.  You rarely see two Beck 904s with the same engine.  The owner has another 904 that he just finished.  The body on that car is super thin, the car weighs 1400 pounds and has a, get this, carbureted Porsche GT 3 engine and transmission that is putting out better than 550 HP.  Talk about insane…

A word from Ray Gillies on Beck: “Chuck Beck is a character – he is really meticulous and imaginative. He a has built cars, boats, and airplanes.  He was very active in southern Ca. sports cars, in the 50s and 60s and has worked with Ford, GM, Caroll Shelby, and Jim Hall – a life well lived.”

The Datsun community always makes a strong showing at the Caffeine and Octane show.  The S30 is a beautiful shape and this 240Z is a rev above the rest.  My guess is well-executed weekend warrior with assets such as Sparco seats, stripped/cleaned/painted/caged interior, Mikuni carbs, etc. The hood vents speak to the car’s sporting intentions. You also have to love a Datsun of this vintage rolling on Panasport wheels.
My father owned a 1978 280Z, and thus I have always entertained the thought of ownership.  That said, I have no idea how I would set the car up and what I would use it for.
Mikuni Corp has been around since 1948 as a major manufacturer of carburetors for performance based Japanese cars and motorcycles.
This beautiful S30 is sporting a triple set of the Mikuni carburetor with simple wire mesh filters. The mechanical linkages for the throttle bodies are simple yet beautiful in their purpose.
