Daily Driven, HKS Supercharged Scion FR-S Autocross and Track Car

,

Simon just replaced the original plastic intake with this 2017 Toyota intake that is all aluminum. Additionally, a Grams 72mm throttle body was installed and then the car was run on a dyno. The gains were quite impressive.

We know that FR-S, BRZ, and 86 owners are getting tired of patiently waiting for a forced induction version of their car to be a factory option. Like these others, Simon was tired of waiting and in October of 2016 he installed an HKS supercharger. Pleased with the performance upgrade but knowing that more was available, in early April 2017 he replaced the original plastic intake with the 2017 red aluminum intake that he coupled with a Grams 72mm throttle body.  Much larger than the original 65mm unit, Grams claims a 48% increase in airflow and a substantial horsepower increase. Going on the dyno after this installation saw the approximately 245 whp rise to 276.3 whp. Worthwhile gains. Even better, the car now pulls hard right up to the redline.

Where's the supercharger? At first glance under the hood it was evident that something was there – but I didn't see it for the hot and cold piping. On the lower right is the HKS oil tank that provides an individual oil feed for the supercharger. In addition to the oil tank, the HKS kit comes with a separate oil cooler to maintain effective supercharger temperatures.

The HKS supercharger for the FR-S is, when you look under the hood directly from the front, hidden by the piping. From the passenger side, it comes into view. HKS supplies everything required – intercooler, piping, belts, etc.

On your left is the HKS intercooler. On your right is the engine's oil cooler and behind that is the supercharger's oil cooler.

The HKS supercharger kit plus bolt-ons certainly brings the FR-S boxer engine to life!
