LA Auto Show 2016: Nerd’s Eye View – Race Cars and Randoms

Notice how the wheel well opening is round-shape and follows the curvature of the tire all the way around. My guess is that this is to reduce drag by minimizing the opening and reducing the gap between the bodywork and tire. Check out the big kick-up on the under tray in front of the tire.
The brake caliper is mounted almost at the bottom. That’s not very common. The brake rotor hat has massive slots to allow for the thermal expansion and contraction of the carbon rotor.
The rear wheel opening is also round like the front, hugging the tire. The rear rotor looks smaller than the front, so it appears the rear wheel also has a smaller opening, resulting in a semi-disk. This should reduce drag.
The rear wing has two elements. The rear of the upper surface has a wicker bill/spoiler/aerodynamic ‘thingy,’ which I’m guessing works in conjunction with the rear wing and diffuser. I believe the engine is a 2.0L gas engine, so the oval exhaust pipe poking out the middle isn’t huge.
About that rear diffuser…. It goes up pretty far. The rear tire is sealed off as much as possible to keep the dirty air from the tire from interacting with the airflow in the diffuser.
