LA Auto Show 2017: Nerd’s Eye View – Unique Cars, Engines, and Things

Mitsubishi showed off a plug-in hybrid platform. It might underpin something like the next Evo. Yeah, not exactly what everyone would want, but seems logical if the Evo ever comes back.

Gas engine in the front, battery pack in the middle, and twin motors at the rear (making the vehicle AWD, or S-AWC in Mitsu speak).

Jeep finally upgraded the Wrangler after who knows how long. Lots of peeps were taking pictures.

A huge change happened under the hood with the powerplant changing to this compact 2.0L turbocharged gas engine making 295 lb-ft of torque and 270hp. You can see the turbo is twin-scroll and the massive close-coupled cat bolted to it. There’s an EGR tube coming off the exhaust elbow too.

This engine appears to designed for maximum low-end torque and instant response needed in a Jeep. The air path from the turbo to the intake manifold is extremely short. The air exits the compressor into the black tube. It’s hard to tell if that tube is metal or plastic, but it would have to be some very high temperature capable plastic if it were. The compressor bypass valve is right before the bend in the tube.
