Nerd’s Eye View: Mazdaspeed Mazda 767B

Looking down where the axle mounts to the transaxle you can see that the output flange of the transaxle is secured by safety wired bolts. The safety wire is ran so that each bolt is always tightening its neighbor. This is the most robust way to ensure a bolt doesn't vibrate loose in an endurance race. The only caveat is that drilling all those holes in the bolts is painstaking work.

The cockpit of a race car is always entertaining because rarely do you see two that are identical. Let's zoom in and take a closer look.

All the essential switches and fuses are here to the left of the steering wheel. Only thing that might catch your eye is the fuel cell control panel in the center of the dash with some “informational tape” to the right.

Good old mechanical gauges mounted up high so the driver can keep an eye on what's important. Water termperature, oil temperature, oil pressure, and fuel pressure are all very important to a high strung racing engine. Looking at the “max” needle on each gauge and all systems are looking pretty good, though that 105C water temp is getting pretty hot for a rotary.

This digital dash may not quite qualify as old-school cool being digital and all, but it's still pretty awesome to see where that type of technology is today…extremely similar except with much more functionality and a lot less bulk. The L-R turn signal toggle is actually pretty cool too.
