Nerd’s Eye View: Tilton Interiors Mitsubishi Evo 9

,

tilton interiors evo 9 switch panelThe switch and button panel uses motorsport grade buttons found commonly on pro racing steering wheels. A Deutsch Autosport connector connects this switch panel to the rest of the system. That blue AP Racing knob is probably for brake bias.

I am a little confused because I see an electric motor on the steering rack, but I see that the hydraulic power steering pump system is still in place. Perhaps the team ran out of time before WTAC 2012 (when this picture was taken) since the motor does not appear to be electrically connected. The AP Racing pedal assemblies are very nice parts. There's a linear potentiometer on the back of the throttle pedal. I'm going to guess that is for the accelerator pedal input for the drive by wire throttle control. Most systems use an OE type sensor with two position sensors in it. By cross checking these two position sensors, the ECU can ensure there is no stuck throttle or a range error in the system and prevent unintended acceleration.

tilton interiors evo 9 roll cageThe roll cage is made to FIA specifications and has all the features necessary for a Time Attack car with plenty of triangulation.

tilton interiors evo 9 carbon doorThe doors appear to be cut out factory units so there is still some weight to be lost on this car. Here's another shot of the robust roll cage. Then there's Martin on the right kickin' back probably recovering from the night before.

tilton interiors evo racetech kevlar seatThe ultra sweet Racetech carbon kevlar seat is mounted to the chassis directly with aluminum brackets to keep the weight down. One of the rear air jacks is visible here.

tilton evo rear seatHere's a shot of the rear section of the cage. The aluminum cover where the rear seats were originally covers the fuel cell and oil tank to keep the driver safe from fuel and hot oil in case there is an incident.

tilton interiors evo dry sump tankThe Petersen lightweight 2.5 gallon (10 quart) oil tank sits where the rear right passenger's butt once sat. Petersen tanks are great because they can be taken apart and thoroughly cleaned in case of engine failure.
