Project E36 M3 (Silver): Part 3 – Uncorking the M3 with the help of a Borla Cat-Back Sport Exhaust

Borla Exhaust Tips BackBorla’s unique 3” dual round exhaust Tips are both angle-cut and have a rolled edge to give them a very refined and sporty look.  The muffler is fed by dual 2” mandrel-bent pipes that match the diameter of the factory pre-cat tubing.  This design helps keep exhaust gas temps hot and fast flowing to reduce back pressure, improve performance, and reduce drone.
Stock E36 M3 Exhaust RearThe stock single-walled exhaust tips lack character.
Stock Muffler LowThe stock muffler is very large and low-hanging.  I painted it black years ago to prevent rust and to reduce eye-drawing attention due to its size.
Stock Muffler UnderThe stock muffler has a slight bend in it to straighten the exhaust flow.
InstructionsIt’s impressive that Borla includes model-specific, step by step instructions with pictures when companies often use a base model car to cover the entire line which frequently does not relate to specific models.  Their instructions were spot on with the easiest and best method to remove and install the mufflers.
Loosen MufflerWe began our exhaust swap by removing the two exhaust hangers that are fastened with two nuts to the chassis.  Borla’s instructions recommended unbolting the two nuts that connect the muffler to the hanger.  In retrospect, their directions would have been a lot easier and the hanger could be removed once the muffler was out of the way.  The stock exhaust is really heavy and removal is a two man operation.
