Project FD RX7 Restomod: Part 20 – Competition Clutch Triple Disc Organic Clutch

  • Billy Johnson

FD RX-7 Competition Clutch Triple Disc Organic Clutch and Fisch Racing Tech FlywheelWe chose the Competition Clutch Triple Disc Organic Clutch now that our FD RX-7 will be equipped with the CD009 Transmission swap.

In any car build, it is important to have a plan and work towards that end goal.  In Part 7 and Part 17, we were excited to use McLeod’s twin disc RST clutch for our FD due to its light pedal, amazing drivability and massive torque capacity.  We really liked how the clutch was ‘future-proof’ where we could send the clutch back to McLeod to replace the stock FD’s 1×23 spline clutch centers for the 1×26 spline clutch centers to be used on the Tremec T56 Magnum transmission swap that we were planning for.

However, in Part 18, our plans changed and we decided on upgrading the transmission right off the bat to the Nissan CD009 which has a lot of advantages over the T56 Magnum.  Unfortunately, the McLeod RST clutch does not fit this transmission and we had to look at an alternative solution.

Competition Clutch Triple Disc Organic Clutch, Fisch Racing Tech Lightweight Flywheel FD RX-7Enter the Competition Clutch Triple Disc Organic Clutch (PN: 18410047S).  Rated at over 1,000 horsepower, this 7.25” triple disc clutch belongs to the “184” Competition Clutch series line and is the most economical way to get into a true racing clutch.

Available in 1-4 disc configurations, these clutches have a much lower Moment Of Inertia (M.O.I) than a stock style 10.5” clutch, and up to a 20% lower M.O.I. than other manufacturer’s racing clutches.  This allows for faster acceleration, quicker revving, quicker shift times, and reduced synchro/dog ring wear.

Competition Clutch Inc. (CCI) is one of the fastest growing performance clutch companies in North America.  As a sister-company to McLeod Racing (owned by the Wharton Automotive Group), Competition Clutch Inc. is the leader in the JDM / sport compact clutch and flywheel market supporting everything from street driven daily drivers on up to road race, drag, and drift cars.

With this clutch, we are using the Rotary-specific Multi-disc Fisch Racing Tech Billet Chromoly Flywheel (PN: 1-I2-0023) which his designed for any 7.25” multi-disc clutch applications.

Competition Clutch Organic DiscThe unique organic discs are made up of a proprietary blend of organic material that is uniform in consistency compared to traditional organic clutch discs that are made of carbon and woven aramid or metal fibers.  These discs deliver excellent drivability and smooth engagement for daily driving conditions while having the ability to absorb the shock of high-power abuse and providing superior holding capacity and longevity compared to woven disc organic clutches.

Competition Clutch Triple Disc Organic Clutch FD3S RX-7The Competition Clutch triple organic clutch has two center floating steel plates feature the Power-V drive system of angled legs that self-center the plate.  This design evens out the drive forces in the clutch, and provides an inherent dynamic balance.  This greatly improves reliability, smooth engagement, durability, and power efficiency by increasing the surface area contact of the clutch and lowering the stress on each component of the clutch.

Any reason why you didn’t go with one of the Tilton twin disc options?

It was not available at the time and we are excited to see how this organic disc design and technology performs. It has the potential to have smooth engagement characteristics and excellent low-inertia response. Stay tuned for our review.

Hi guys i have a tilton hydraulic throwout bearing/slave cylinder and im using a Mcleod twin disk clutch and Tilton H2B flywheel. I went to bleed the system and the piston popped out without touching the the clutch. It has about 1mm gap with the piston fully extended. What can i do? Where can i get a spacer?

You are going to need to get a longer Tilton HRB piston and/or a threaded adjustment sleeve. Be sure to measure the gap and follow Tilton’s instructions for the fully compressed clearance requirements.

    Hello Billy.
How did get the piston from the Clutch slave to mount to the clutch pedal?
Did you replace the clevis and eliminate the anti theft switch that was attached ?
I’m doing the same conversion but the threads on the piston on the tilton Slave does not match the OEM thread that mates to the clevis on pedal.
    Thanks
