Project FR-S- Getting Torque Everywhere with an Innovate Motorsports Supercharger

,

Next the intake tube and stock airbox are installed.  We removed the small intake part of the airbox, effectively making it larger and less restrictive.  Later we are probably going to modify the intake to use the Greddy airbox and cone filter from their cold air intake that we were running previously.

We had changed the oil at 1000 miles previously but had put about 3000 miles on that oil since.  Since our supercharger is going to put a higher demand on our FA20 engine, we switched the oil again for Motul 300V racing synthetic oil in 5w30.  We have used this oil in our racecars for years with good results and it even smells good.

We added the engine oil and changed out the oil filter to a K&N high performance oil filter.  The K&N filter has a heavier case to withstand high oil pressure and a hex on the end of the case so it can be removed with a wrench.  No more spearing stuck filters with screwdrivers.  It also has an anti drainback valve and a high flowing media with superior filtration.

With our system installed we did Innovate's ECUTEK reflash for a stock engine with supercharger kit.

Back to the dyno we went.

We used an Innovate Motorsports LC-1 wide band air fuel ratio meter to log our AFR.  It worked very well but Innovate has already come out with an LC-2 which performs even better.

We were very pleased with our dyno results.  42 more wheel hp and 35 lb/ft of torque with more power and torque available everywhere in the engine's operating range.  The peak numbers might not seem as impressive as other FI kits but you have to look at the area under the curve which is mighty impressive.  Think of the Innovate Motorsports kit as an additional 1000cc of displacement!  You can also note that our stingy Superflow eddy current dyno is pretty conservative.  It usually reads about 10 less hp than a Dynojet for instance.

We really like what the Innovate Motorsports supercharger did for Project FR-S.  The car is smooth and tractable.  The blower only makes a slight whine.  It feels like a bigger engine, like a 3000cc.  Innovate is working on getting a CARB approval for the kit which is also exciting news.

The kit does need an intercooler.  We noticed that over several runs the blower gets heatsoaked and you can feel the power decline until things cool off.  Innovate is about to release a water to air intercooler for the kit and you bet we will evaluate it. We think the intercooler will make this kit a must have.  Thanks to the well designed kit, This is one of the easiest bolts on for maximum power that we have yet to experience.

The good news is that after a few hundred miles, the kit's power is still stable.  We think Innovate Motorsport might have gotten a good handle on the ECU.  Stay tuned, we will wok to get over 200 reliable WHP from our FR-S and will continue to work on our suspension.
