Project GD STI – Checking Out The Development of KW’s New 3-Way Adjustable Clubsport Coilovers

,

The piston and rod is much like a standard Clubsport with the rebound adjustment in the piston.
So Klaus Frank sent us a nice going home gift, a set of Prototype GD STI 3-way Clubsports to try out.  These had just been pulled off the test car.  We were quite happy with the performance of our Clubsports but were itching to give the 3-ways a try.  These shocks should now be in production.  Like all Clubsports the 3-ways have corrosion resisting stainless steel bodies and rust resistant hardware for all season use in the harshest of conditions.
Unlike your typical racing use 3-way shock, the KW Clubsports are designed for all weather daily long term use.  They are equipped with KW's trademark corrosion resistant stainless steel bodies and seize resistant steel reinforced plastic spring collars.  The shocks have dustboots and seals designed for durability instead of the ultimate in low friction.
The Subaru front struts rely on the stock lower eccentric for camber adjustment and use this fixed upper mount that is set high in the strut tower to maximize wheel travel.  The pillow ball shock mount plate uses a corrosion resistant spherical bearing and corrosion resistant hardware.  The rebound adjuster is at the top of the shock shaft in typical KW fashion.
The compression adjusters are large and easy to reach, very important for quick trackside adjustment by feel when you are trying to adjust without jacking the car up.
The KW upper mounts were very high quality but we wanted to have more adjustment in camber and to add more positive caster.  At the advice of Subaru tuner Race Comp Engineering, we chose these camber plates from Vorshlag.  The Vorshlag plates have one degree of additional positive caster built into them and use high quality corrosion resistant bearings and hardware.  What we like best about the Vorshlag plates is their low overall stack height and the huge sealed bearing in the upper spring hat that assures low friction when turning and free spinning of the spring to reduce noise and spring kinking forces on the shock shaft.  The bearing also takes all the thrust load off the spherical bearing so it will last much longer.  These things make the Vorshlag plates much more streetable in daily driving compared to other camber plates.
