Project GD STI – Checking Out The Development of KW’s New 3-Way Adjustable Clubsport Coilovers

,

The Vorshlag camber plate has a pretty low stack height to preserve wheel travel, however it is not as low as the KW plate that extends up into the shock tower.  Fortunately the KW coil over has quite a generous bump stop so we will shorten it by the difference in stack height between the two plates.  A cool feature is that the spring seat articulates with the shock shaft.  This helps prevent spring kinking from putting side loads on the shock shaft and helps reduce spring noise, important on a street car.  All of the hardware and bearings are either stainless or have corrosion resistant plating for a long service life on the street.
You can see the generous sealed thrust bearing in the upper spring seat.  This allows the spring to rotate while compressing, and also reduces spring kinking effects on the shock shaft.  It also helps reduce noise and steering effort.  The big bearing takes a lot of load off the spherical bearing in the plate as well for long life.  We love these Vorshlag camber plates.  Note the rear offset to the shock as well.  This increases positive caster by a degree helping turn in, increasing steady state cornering grip, improving straight line stability and helping self steer. They are one of the best for long term street use.
We carefully measured the difference in stack height between the KW plate and the Vorshlag plate and  shortened the bump stop by the difference to maintain wheel travel.  This actually helps the shock as it increases bearing overlap inside the shock.
With everything assembled you can see the free articulation of the plate here.
We used the camber plate and the adjustability of the lower strut eccentrics to give us 3 degrees negative camber and adjust the kingpin angle to reduce the scrub radius of our aggressively wide wheel fitment to only a few mm.  This made our car turn in really well and eliminated just about all understeer.
You can see here how the offset of the Vorshlag plate gives us the one degree additional positive caster.  Our Subie has more front grip than any we have driven to date.  In fact, it turns in almost as nicely as an S2000!
